credit unions with 481 branches and 570 ATMs (as at Jan. 1, 2010).

Ontario's first credit union, now known as Alterna Savings, was established in 1908.

Ontario credit unions affiliated with Central 1 serve 1.2 million members (about 9% of the provincial population).

Together, those credit unions hold over $21 billion in assets (as at Jan. 1, 2010).

Ontario credit unions employ about 4,800 people.

Ontario credit unions are democratically controlled by their locally elected directors.
