B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Miracle Weekend Credit Union Committee presented $340,022 to the B.C. Children’s Hospital to fund lifesaving technological equipment on June 2, 2019.
Over the past year, 60 per cent of B.C.’s 41 credit unions took part in a campaign to raise funds for two pieces of vital equipment—a flexible neuro-endoscope and a surgical laser—that will help save and improve the lives of sick children in B.C.
The neuro-endoscope allows neurosurgeons to diagnose and treat illnesses, such as brain cancer and hydrocephalus, without needing to perform invasive surgery. The surgical laser will treat complex and severe birthmarks that can interfere with eating, breathing and eyesight.
2019 Credit Union Committee Chair, Lesley Lamb, said “Credit unions have strong ties to support the communities where we live, work and play and we are proud of our partnership with B.C. Children’s Hospital.” “Credit unions across the province are working together to support kids’ health throughout the entire province.”
Credit union branches raised the funds through Jeans Day participation, Purdy’s chocolate sales, 50/50 raffles, the annual Bats for a Cause slo-pitch tournament and other event fundraising.
“We want to thank B.C. credit union staff and members for their continued support of this life-saving and life-changing organization,” said Lamb.
The Committee is comprised of representatives from B.C.’s credit unions, Central 1 and Aviso Wealth and has been in place since 1985. Since that time, the Committee has collectively fundraised more than $4 million to support the hospital’s efforts.
