Credit unions aid Red Cross efforts to help victims of B.C. wildfires

VANCOUVER, B.C.— Credit unions and their members in British Columbia and Ontario are supporting Canadian Red Cross relief efforts by donating money to help those affected by wildfires in British Columbia.

Evacuations have forced more than 14,000 residents to leave their homes in recent days with fires destroying property and homes in the Interior. Emergency centres in Prince George, Kelowna and Kamloops are filling up. About 10,000 residents in Williams Lake and the surrounding area are under an evacuation alert, urged to be ready to leave if conditions worsen.

Central 1 Credit Union (Central 1) is also supporting credit unions in the area that have been forced to close branches by matching Red Cross donations made by its employees. Credit union members can make donations online at www.redcross.ca/BCFires/CreditUnionsofBCandON.

“The wildfires raging throughout B.C. are devastating,” said Marilyn Mauritz, Interim CEO of Central 1. “Several of our credit union members and the communities that they serve have directly been affected. It is times like these when we can come together as a cooperative system to help one another. Central 1 is happy to be able to help coordinate the relief efforts with our members and provide dollar-for-dollar donation matching for Central 1 employees.”

Participating credit unions include: Aldergrove Credit Union, Alterna Savings, BlueShore Financial, CCEC, Coast Capital Savings, Coastal Community Credit Union, Community First - a division of Your Neighbourhood Credit Union, East Kootenay Community Credit Union, Education Credit Union, First Credit Union, First West Credit Union (Valley First, Envision Financial, Island Savings), FirstOntario Credit Union, Frontline Financial Credit Union, G&F Financial Group, Grand Forks Credit Union, Greater Vancouver Community Credit Union, Heritage Credit Union, IC Savings, Integris Credit Union, Interior Savings, Kootenay Savings, Ladysmith Credit Union, Lake View Credit Union, Libro Credit Union, Mainstreet Credit Union, Nelson & District Credit Union, North Peace Savings & Credit Union, Northern Savings Credit Union, Prospera Credit Union, Revelstoke Credit Union, SASCU Financial Group, Spruce Credit Union, Summerland & District Credit Union, Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Tandia Financial Credit Union, Union Bay Credit Union, Vancity, VantageOne Credit Union, Victory Community Credit Union, Westminster Savings Credit Union, Williams Lake and District Credit Union, Your Neighbourhood Credit Union and more.
