Credit Unions of B.C. announce winner of the $20,000 “Get Your Share” draw

VANCOUVER, B.C.—The Credit Unions of B.C. today announced that Steve Birsa, a longtime member of Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity) is the winner of the $20,000 Get Your Share™ draw. Steve was picked from more than 30,000 entries from credit union members.

The Credit Unions of B.C. launched the Get Your Share campaign last year to encourage British Columbians who weren’t already members to switch to a credit union. Through the campaign, new members and their friends are invited to get their share of over $500,000 in gifts when they join a B.C. credit union. The program also rewarded existing members for sharing the promotion with their networks. For each person they shared the program with, they earned an entry into the $20,000 draw. Central 1 Credit Union manages the program on behalf of the province’s 45 credit unions.

Steve has been a North Vancouver resident all his life and a Vancity credit union member for more than 20 years. He heard about the Get Your Share promotion through Vancity and shared the campaign with about 15 of his friends and family. The lucky winner (who had expressed his 20,000 thanks) declared ever so responsibly that he would use his winnings to “pay off a small loan and invest the rest of it wisely.”

So far, thousands of British Columbians have signed up to become credit union members through Get Your Share.

British Columbians (over the age of 19) can still open an account at a B.C. credit union to receive ten gifts over the course of five days through Facebook – five to keep and five to share with their Facebook friends. Gift cards range from $5 to $250 from retailers including Mountain Equipment Co-op, Amazon.ca, Starbucks, iTunes and more.

About Credit Unions of BC

British Columbia’s 45 credit unions have a membership of over 1.7 million—more than 1 in 3 British Columbians are members of a credit union. Credit unions are financial cooperatives. Every member becomes a shareholder – that means equal share, equal vote, and equal say. Credit unions are member-focused and community-minded. They’re not just about profit, which means the money they make is shared with local communities and members. For more information, visit www.creditunionsofbc.com.
