Documentary promoting co-ops now on Netflix

VANCOUVER — The excellent documentary A New Economy, which highlights the benefits of the cooperative approach, is now available on Netflix in Canada and the U.S.

The film was created last year with the help of Central 1 Credit Union’s Marketing department on behalf of Credit Unions of BC. Since it was released last October the documentary has been shown at several film festivals around the world and at private screenings. It will be available on Netflix for two years and may be streamed in other areas if it does well in North America.

“This is what we set out to do,” said director Trevor Meier. “From day one, the goal was to create something Netflix-worthy to watch with friends on a Friday night. This is 100 per cent the best outcome we could dream of for reaching a broad audience with a story of why cooperation matters.”

The team behind the documentary is also in negotiations with a theatrical distributor to get it on theatre screens in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Getting the film accepted for Netflix is a real coup for the documentary team since Netflix is focusing on developing and showing its own content.

The film asks: What if working together for the good of all was the most common business model? It examines several organizations – from a London, ON brewery to an urban vegetable farm in Vancouver – that are managed cooperatively. By putting humanity before the bottom line, they are succeeding and finding their place in an economy dominated by big business.
