VANCOUVER – Central 1 Credit Union (Central 1), on behalf of the Credit Union Foundation of BC, is pleased to congratulate Emmet McGrath, Board Director of Westminster Savings, and Jeremy Trigg, Director of Facility and Environmental Management at Vancity, as recipients of the 2019 Distinguished Service Awards. The bi-annual awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to credit unions in B.C.
Emmet McGrath has served on the Board of Directors of Westminster Savings Credit Union since 2004, and from 1987 to 1996. Emmet is a Chartered Professional Accountant with more than thirty years of experience in public accounting and private industry. A partner with KPMG LLP until retiring in 2002, he has served on various mining companies’ boards and is currently on UEX Corporation’ s board. He is also a past director of Central 1 Credit Union and The Co-operators Group Ltd. Having contributed to Westminster Savings’ success for more than 25 years, Emmet brings deep insight and perspective to the governance role, and others view him as a role model for how to be a board member in a member-based organization where enhancing member value is the primary objective. Emmet is passionate about meeting the needs of Westminster Savings members and the health of the entire credit union system in Canada.
An employee of Vancity for 34 years, Jeremy Trigg truly fulfils the role this award recognizes, as an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the B.C. credit union system. Someone who abides by the philosophy of “people helping people,” Jeremy’s commitment to this has been demonstrated through his work on LEED certification, energy reduction, Living Wage advocacy and the creation of the FICANEX partnership. Jeremy is committed to the success of Vancity, its members and colleagues and the communities that credit unions serve.
The awards were presented at a ceremony on April 25, 2019.
About Distinguished Service Awards
The Distinguished Service award is bestowed to an individual in recognition of outstanding service in the BC Credit Union system and in many cases beyond. The award is not limited to credit union directors and employees but extends to all persons who have made exceptional contributions to the BC credit union system and the co-operative movement. The DSA’s are presented bi-annually following a nomination and deliberation process which falls under the responsibility of the Foundation. Nomination papers are accepted and then reviewed by a join committee of both Foundation directors and a member of the Board of Central 1.
About Credit Union Foundation of BC
The Credit Union Foundation of BC was conceived by Farley Dickinson in 1957, who had an extensive career with credit unions. Early sources of funding came from volunteer contributions, raffle sales and donations to honour credit union leaders. Funding now comes mainly from BC credit unions who annually contribute 10 cents per member as well as contributions to trust funds and funding to support young credit union leaders. In 2018 the Foundation awarded $153,000 in individual bursaries in addition to $30,000 to various university and college funds as well as the BC Young Leaders. The Foundation remains a proud component of the BC credit union system and is managed by volunteers representing various credit unions from around the province.
