Today, most payments don’t move right away. They’re bundled into files, processed in batches and often delayed by system cutoff times, business hours and weekend closures. The Real-Time Rail (RTR) will change that. A new 24/7/365 payment system, the RTR will enable instant payments any time, any day.
Operated by Payments Canada and expected to launch through several milestones across 2026 and 2027, the RTR is a transformative step toward modernizing the country’s payment infrastructure. It will enable immediate movement of funds, with richer transaction data attached and real-time confirmation of payment — all powered by ISO 20022, the latest global payment messaging standard.

Why the RTR matters for financial institutions
It raises expectations
People now expect real-time everything, from text messaging to package deliveries. Payments are no exception. The RTR will quickly become the new standard for fast, data-rich transactions.
It levels the playing field
The RTR opens the door for smaller FIs and fintechs to compete with large banks on speed, customer convenience and digital sophistication. With the right integration and user experience, any FI can deliver real-time payments with the same reliability and performance customers expect from enterprise platforms.
It unlocks new services
The RTR will enable features like just-in-time payroll, instant insurance payouts, real-time bill payments and automated cash flow optimization. The rail is just the beginning; what rides on it will define the next wave of value-added products.
It complements existing systems
The RTR doesn’t replace traditional payment systems like Interac®, Lynx (for high-value payments) and ACSS for (batch-based transactions). Instead, it adds a new option for use cases that demand greater speed, transparency and convenience. In fact, Central 1 and most FIs will connect to the RTR via Interac e-Transfer®.
What the RTR means for your customers
- Faster payments – No more “3 to 5 business days.” Funds will move in seconds.
- Better cash flow control – Real-time money movement enables faster decisions and improved liquidity.
- Greater transparency – Richer transaction data allows for more streamlined tracking, reconciliation and audit trails.
- Smoother user experiences – Think instant e-commerce refunds, peer-to-peer transfers and bill payments.

What we’re doing to help you prepare

- Modernizing and adopting global standards – We recently upgraded our wires platform, implementing ISO 20022 more than two years ahead of national deadlines.
- Enhancing back-end integrations – We’re making ongoing improvements behind the scenes to support real-time capabilities, including enhancements to our Interac e-Transfer solution.
- Engaging closely with Payments Canada – We’re actively involved as RTR timelines and access models evolve, and we’ll share clear, timely guidance as requirements are confirmed.
