Can you tell us a bit about your background in Canada’s financial industry?
I started my financial career almost 20 years ago. My background is in accounting, with a strong focus on financial planning and analytics for influencing key strategic decision making. I also have an extensive managerial background, and I still provide training and mentorship in development and process improvement. I have been with Payments Canada for a number of years now; I started as the Director of Finance supporting our modernization program, then became CFO, and most recently I had the opportunity of being Payments Canada’s Interim President and Co-CEO.
You’re participating in a panel at Momentum 2024 to discuss the future of payments — one of our highly anticipated panels. Why is participating in this panel important and what are you most looking forward to?
As an industry, it’s so important for all of us to not only stay on top of the latest developments in payments, but to also have our unique voices heard. The payment ecosystem includes so many perspectives from different sectors — financial institutions, stakeholders, fintechs, government and financial market infrastructures like Payments Canada to name a few – that I’m most looking forward to hearing from the industry about the topics that matter to them most.
On the topic of the future of payments, what is top of mind for you?
I think there are three topics that are top of mind for me: the first is, of course, the Real-Time Rail payment system, which will bring payment settlement and finality to Canadians in real-time and change the payment landscape tremendously. Of course, coupled with the speed of real-time payments is real-time fraud, so that is a space we are very focused on. The third is Payments Canada’s expanded membership once the Canadian Payments Act changes, which received royal assent over the summer, come into effect. This is especially interesting as it relates to credit union membership eligibility.
Can you speak to the collaboration to advance the future of payments in Canada? What role can Central 1’s clients play in the collaborative effort?
We all have a role to play in advancing modern payment initiatives and payment innovation in Canada. We are very fortunate to have such an incredibly strong and resilient financial industry in Canada, and by working together, we can all deliver value and innovative payment solutions to Canadians.
