Canada’s payments landscape is entering a new real-time era. With the upcoming launch of the Real-Time Rail (RTR), money will be able to move in seconds, 24/7/365 — creating powerful opportunities for fintechs to innovate, compete and scale.

But capturing that opportunity will take more than connecting to a new payment rail. It also requires a clear understanding of how real-time payments move behind the scenes and what responsibilities come with participation.

The Real-Time Rail explained

Operated by Payments Canada, the RTR will allow participating organizations to send and receive payments almost instantly, with confirmation and settlement happening in real time.

It will also allow richer transaction data to travel with the payment, helping your organization improve reconciliation, reporting, customer service, fraud monitoring and more.

Why the RTR matters for fintechs

The RTR is more than a faster way to move money. It can reshape how you build products, serve customers and compete in a market where real-time money movement is becoming the expectation.

Smoother customer experiences: Real-time, irrevocable payments can make money movement feel like a seamless part of the customer journey, shifting the focus from the payment to the overall experience.

Stronger competitive positioning: Instant settlement and payment confirmation can help your fintech deliver the speed, transparency and convenience customers increasingly expect, supporting stronger competition from modern financial services.

Richer payment data: More detailed information traveling with payments supports improved reconciliation, fraud monitoring, risk management and analytics.

Faster product innovation: Real-time payments remove batch constraints fintechs historically designed around, enabling 24/7 processing and faster build, launch and iteration of real-time, data-rich experiences.

Reduced operational friction: Immediate settlement and confirmation replace delayed, uncertain flows with real-time certainty — reducing reconciliation, failed payments, support inquiries and simplifying liquidity management.

How fintechs can participate

Canada’s payments ecosystem is evolving. With the introduction of the Retail Payment Activities Act the industry is shifting from being regulated based on who you are as an organization to what you do, creating opportunities for new entrants to play a larger role in the delivery of alternative payment solutions.

However, that opportunity also comes with higher expectations. Fintechs that decide to participate directly will need to navigate:

  • Regulatory requirements – You’ll need to meet regulatory requirements and the Standards set by Payments Canada for direct participant in the RTR, including safeguarding funds, managing liquidity, anti-money laundering, operational resilience and more.
  • How money moves – Real-time payments require a strong understanding of exchange, clearing and settlement — not just the customer-facing payment experience. It also requires understanding the mechanics and processes necessary to move funds, settle financial obligations, and how to interact with other participants in the system according to the approved processes.
  • Partner strategy – You’ll need to determine which capabilities to build in-house, which to outsource and who can reliably support your growth.
  • Technical requirements – While many fintechs are well-equipped for technical requirements, RTR participation also requires strict security standards and certification. Participation requires meeting stringent service level standards, as well as adhering to numerous rules.
  • Operational demands – With 24/7/365 payments, you’ll need to plan for real-time transaction monitoring, customer support and continuous payments reconciliation.
  • Compliance accountability – Partners can help support compliance, but every RTR participant must understand their obligations and meet required standards themselves. Responsibility can’t be transferred.
Participation models

The RTR offers multiple participation options, depending on your capabilities, resources and strategic goals:

Supported participation:

You can partner with a provider like Central 1 to manage the full payments lifecycle, including exchange, clearing and settlement, while you focus on the customer experience.

Partial participation:

You can take on more responsibility for specific aspects of the lifecycle, such as direct exchange with other participants, while relying on a partner for functions like settlement and liquidity.

Direct participation:

You can connect directly to the RTR and independently manage all aspects of exchange and clearing and settlement, giving you flexibility in return for responsibility.

How Central 1 can help

The RTR creates significant opportunities for fintechs, but realizing those opportunities require more than technical connectivity. It takes payments expertise, regulatory understanding, operational readiness and a clear participation strategy.
